Activation Lock is a security feature designed by Apple and tied to the Find My service. It is automatically enabled when you sign in to your device with an Apple Account and turn on Find My. Its primary purpose is to prevent anyone else from using or selling your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch if it is ever lost or stolen. You will encounter it on the setup screen after a device has been erased, as the lock remains active even after a full factory reset, making the device unusable without the original owner's credentials.

This distinction is critical because it dictates the entire unlock process. A "Clean" status means Find My is ON, but the device has not been placed in Lost Mode. The unlock for these devices is a standard, server-based procedure with a very high success rate and fast turnaround. A "Lost" status means the owner has marked the device as lost or stolen. This triggers a much stricter security protocol by Apple. Removing a Lost lock is significantly more complex and often requires a different, more resource-intensive server-side method. This is why we have separate service paths and pricing — a Clean unlock method will simply not work on a Lost device.
